Minnesota -
The death toll from an outbreak of fungal meningitis has reached at least 11 now. As an added precaution locally, all Mayo Clinic Health System sites in Southwest Minnesota have removed and quarantined all items purchased from the manufacturer. The CDC says more than 100 people in 10 states have gotten sick from steroid shots used to treat back pain. The steroid was made in a Massachusetts pharmacy. Regional Director, Kevin Burns says, "We took the extraordinary step of remaining pharmaceuticals that we purchased from this company and none of our patients were exposed. Our patients can be sure that any and all medications they receive are safe and appropriate." All Mayo locations confirm they did not purchase any of the steroid being blamed on the outbreak.
