MANKATO, Minn. -
Our extreme drought has also meant extreme water usage in Mankato.
Mankato public works saw record water use in June, July, August, and September and is on pace to reach 2 billion gallons used by the end of the year. The rivers where the city gets much of its water are also hitting record lows.
Mark Knoff with Mankato Public Works says, "Right now the level is down to about .82 feet at the gauge, when normally it's about 6ft."
The low river levels haven't caused problems for the city yet, but that could change if our drought continues throughout the winter and spring. The city does have two emergency wells if the situation gets dire.
