Smiths Mill -
Smoke could be seen for miles while a wildfire burned a marshy area in eastern Blue Earth County. The call came in just after 10:00 Thursday morning. Janesville, St. Clair, Eagle Lake, and Madison Lake Fire Departments all responded.
Authorities with the Blue Earth County Sheriff's office believe the blaze was accidental in origin. An apparent failed wheel bearing on a trailer started two separate fires along Highway 14. The larger one burned a swampy area approximately 1/2 mile west of Smiths Mill. A smaller blaze was quickly put out in the ditch between Highway 14 and the railroad tracks that run alongside Highway 14. That fire was just east of the Highway 60 junction. Authorities believe both fires were started by the same vehicle.
