Girl Scouts Celebrate Centennial Day of Service

MANKATO , MINN. -

Today Girl Scouts celebrate the organization's 100 year anniversary by cleaning up the Mankato community.  Centennial Day of Service Coordinator Joann Ericksen says, "A lot of them wanted to rake leaves believe it or not raking leaves was the highlight."

River Valley's Girl Scouts in the Mankato area participated in the Centennial Day of Service by cleaning up Riverfront Park. Tens of thousands of girls from 49 counties in Minnesota and Wisconsin worked together to clean up their hometowns today. This event was part of the 2012 Take Action Project, which is designed to remove 20,000 pounds of phosphorus, prevent 10 million pounds of algae growth, and save millions in clean–up costs. Ericksen says, "It's just a good overall community project for you know all the girl scouts to get involved in and do something for their community."

The girls raked earlier this morning and compiled an estimated 100 bags of leaves.
