MADELIA, Minn. -
Long–time True Value employee Jake Stevensen gets a fair amount of business on the first day of the pheasant opener. Stevensen says, "We've sold a lot of licenses today."
To a non–hunter, today may seem like a dreary day for finding pheasants, but Stevensen says, "A little rain will actually better help the dogs pick up the scent better."
Next year, rain or shine, Stevensen can expect even more business, because the city of Madelia announced Governor Mark Dayton will start off next year's pheasant opener here in the self–proclaimed pheasant capitol of Minnesota. Stevensen says, "I thought it was pretty cool; it's outstanding for our town and our community."
But even in Madelia, Stevensen says, the Governor might have his work cut out for him. Stevensen says, "Never know when they're going to get up where they're going to get up when they going to fly which direction."
Brian Lambrecht started hunting earlier this morning and shot one pheasant. Lambrecht says, "I might go out again the dog was getting tired his first day out so he's a little out of shape."
This experienced hunter had one important piece of advice for the governor and his companions. Lambrecht says, "Shoot some clay pigeons, practice shooting before you go so you don't miss."
He says no matter where you are, practice always makes perfect.
