Mankato West graduate starts as QB for the Gophers

A Mankato West graduate saw a dream come true on Saturday.

True Freshman Phil Nelson was under center for the Minnesota Gophers in their game against the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday.

Starter MarQueis Gray is still recovering from injury and backup -B Max Shortell has struggled in Big Ten Games.

As a result, Head Coach Jerry Kill made Nelson the starter.

Former teammate and Mankato West High School junior, Adrian Anderson says seeing Nelson on television Saturday afternoon was a privilege.

"It's really awesome to see him up there, I never thought he'd play this year, and now...seeing him on the big screen it's just awe inspiring," Anderson said.
