MANKATO, Minn. -
The at-large city council seat in Mankato is a rematch from 2008, between incumbent Mike Laven and challenger Chris Frederick.
The two candidates have eleven days to make their case, and it appears they will both be using Laven's time in office for their closing arguments.
Laven says, "The people of Mankato can see what has happened over the last four years when I've been on the city council. The growth, the development, the planning of that. Certainly the city leads the way, but part of that is cooperating and collaborating with eh private sector and non-profits and making this community a desirable place to live."
Frederick says, "We start looking at the budget as it's been presented for the last how many years now and every year we see the property tax and the property levies go up every single year. This year is no different. The city council is looking at 2.6% with shifting a million dollars out of the budget. We continue to see the same thing over and over again, and that's a lot of prices keep going up and I don't think we've really focused on what the priorities are of Mankato."
Another point of contention revolves around permitting for the new Bull Pucky's restaurant in downtown, where Laven cast the sole 'no' vote because he doubted the business plan would work out.
Frederick says, "I don't think it's the place of the city council to tell entrepreneurs whether or not their business will succeed or not. I think it's important that we at least give every entrepreneur that opportunity to succeed and make a go of their business."
Laven says, "The reality is that we were issuing a license related to the distribution and sale of liquor, and that's something the council does on a daily basis throughout the city with several different establishments. We do have a vested interest in making sure that they can succeed."
Laven defeated Frederick by a 51-49 margin in their last contest in 2008.
