Voters in the state rejected a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, giving gay rights activists and their allies a major victory.

The marriage amendment had been polling neck and neck days leading up to election.

Josh Schutz says, "I was prepared to be disappointed and I was ecstatic that I didn't have to be."

No votes prevailed just 52 to 48 percent. Sean Coffman and Josh Schutz are students at MSU. They along with several other opponents to the amendment raised millions and spent many hours to persuade voters that the amendment amounted to discrimination... and their voices were heard in Minnesota.

Josh Schutz says, "I think the conversation is going to continue and people will open their minds and talk down discrimination and I really see Minnesota embracing marriage equality in the near future."

Sean Coffman says, "Minnesota has shown its true colors and that it's a state that doesn't believe in discrimination or inequality."

For Jody Swanson, she was thinking of her son who is gay. Jody and her husband spent hours knocking on doors to support the get out the vote initiative, in the end it paid off.

Jody Swanson says, "That was the relief of the title wave says that we made history."
Tonight Sean and Josh  joined several other supporters in St. Paul, celebrating their victory at the capitol.

As far as where this story goes from here, there is currently a court case in Hennepin County seeking to have the current law banning same sex marriage considered unconstitutional.
On top of that, the state senate and house will be controlled by the DFL, a party more sympathetic to gay marriage.
