NORTH MANKATO, Minn. -
Local and state leaders held a Community Leader Roundtable in North Mankato this afternoon to discuss the importance of Local Government Aid.
St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and others of the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities stressed the need for continuing support of the program. Mayor Coleman says, "There is a whole lot of different ways that these communities use these resources, but the fact of the matter is, if you are going to have a strong city, you have to be able to have the resources to build that city."
LGA's main purpose is to even out the property taxation, meaning that even the poorest of cities still benefit from basic needs like snow plowing. It is distributed accordingly, meaning cities that can afford to pay for services themselves through taxes will not receive as much as cities that cannot afford to pay for their services.
