EAGLE LAKE, Minn. -
Elementary students are getting a lesson in kindness and caring by getting their hands dirty helping others.
Eagle Lake Elementary students were busy today packing meals for Kids Against Hunger, the New Hope based charitable organization. The students would put a scoop of protein powder, freeze dried vegetables, and then larger scoops of soy and rice into meal bags that were packed into boxes to be shipped to those in need in the community, the nation, and abroad.
The students raised over $4,000 to pack these meals. But while charitable work is always nice, it ties in with the broader topics the school has been stressing, kindness and caring. Ginnette Kearney, Principal at Eagle Lake Elementary says, "Today is really the culmination of a month-long focus on kindness and caring. Students have had some lessons in their classrooms around kindness and caring, they have been practicing it on the playground and today is the culmination by packing meals to show kindness and caring for children around the world who don't have enough to eat."
The students could be seen having a great time. Every time a box was filled with meals, a bell was rung by Principal Kearney and the students would clap and cheer.
The school has donated much over the years, but this was the first time they have partnered up with Kids Against Hunger. They had a goal set of 35,000 meals for the day. When KEYC was there, they had already packed 11,000 meals in the first three hours of the school day.
