City Addresses Staffing Concerns at Mankato Fire Station

Posted: Updated:

The City of Mankato is addressing staffing concerns at the former fire station number 1 located on Madison and Broad Street.

Some residents involved with the Tourtollette Park Neighborhood Association say they're concerned that the fire station is not properly staffed during the evening. However, the city stresses that their firefighters can still maintain quality response times to all neighborhoods in the city to assure citizens' safety."

Mankato Council Member At Large, Mike Laven says, "There isn't a fire station in that area that is staffed 24-7 like it used to be, but when we look at the calls both medical and fire most happen on Main toward the center of the community where the buildings are older and higher needs medical services with a central located facility for all of us to benefit from."

Adding that firefighters are staffed at the additional stations to provide better service to all locations within the city.

However, Marilyn Bennette says the fire station currently located a few blocks from her home is an asset to her neighborhood. She doesn't want to rely on the new station scheduled to be built next year.

Bennette says, "They should leave this one here because even when they build the new one on top it's not going to be very fast for us and these are older homes that are more apt to burn down."

Laven says, "We are going to maintain the quality of this community's safety and that is paramount both to the council of the city and the organization so we're not intending to sacrifice anyone's safety in this process."

That means maintaining a 5 to 7 minute response time to any location, from any fire station in the city.
