MANKATO, Minn. -
As decorations go up this time of the year, it's likely thata few of the strings won't glow, but there is a better place for your old or brokenlight than in the trash.
Once again this year, MRCI WorkSourse, an employment centerfor people with disabilities, is collecting old Christmas lights. Once MRCIgets the lights, their employees remove the bulbs for glass recycling and thewiring for copper recycling.
Tammi Leiferman of MRCI WorkSource says, "It's good forthe environment, we are keeping those things out of the landfill plus it alsogives our clients and it is a good paying job for them and we get a lot oflights so it keeps us busy."
Last year, MRCI collected over 6–thousand pounds of oldChristmas lights.
Collection boxes for holiday lights and relatedmaterials are located at all MRCI locations including the MRCI Thrift Store,Hilltop Hy-Vee, Hilltop Florist, Drummer's Garden Center, Ace Hardware and atthe Blue Earth County Environmental Services office on third floor of theGovernment Center.
