Greater Mankato United Way Over Halfway to Fundraising Goal

MANKATO, Minn. -

As temperatures sink for the winter months, the Mankato Area United Way's thermometer measuring fundraising efforts continues to climb.

It's been just over two months since the 2013 campaign kicked off, and the United Way is just under 60% of meeting their historic fundraising goal of $2 million dollars.

With a quarter of people in the area living in poverty, the United Way says this money goes a long way.

President of Greater Mankato United Way Laura Bowman says, " It does seem overwhelming to look at all of the needs and of the issues in the community, but at the end of the day its pretty simple, a lot of people give a little bit and the impact of that is huge because it literally does almost touch everyone in our area."

Officials say corporate giving is up 6% this year, which also has a domino effect on giving from employees.

The United Way began in Mankato in 1931, when it raised $6,000. Since then more than $46 million has been raised.
