Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium was under lockdown on Saturday, after the suicide of 25-year-old linebacker, Jovan Belcher.
Police say Belcher drove to the practice facility and thanked the Chiefs' coach and general manager before taking his own life.
"He never threatened them or anything, they talked for a little bit and that's when he shot himself," said Officer Darin Snapp of the Kansas City Police Department.
The suicide followed a domestic incident five miles from the stadium. Police say Belcher shot his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins, multiple times, killing her.
The two share a three month old baby.
"Recently they'd been arguing before the shooting this morning," said Snapp.
Belcher's mother called 911. She had recently moved in to the house, possibly to help with her grandchild.
Belcher spent all four of his NFL seasons with the Chiefs, moving in to the starting lineup and playing in every game this year. But the team is 1-10 this season —– stuck in an 8–game losing streak.
The Chiefs are planning to go ahead with Sunday's home game against the Carolina Panthers.
