MANKATO, Minn. -
Blue Earth County received commendation from Governor Mark Dayton for their environmentally friendly way of handling a construction project.
A portion of the county road 12 project wasn't holding up, so the county brought in specialists, who recommended using scrap tires as fill.
Blue Earth County Engineer Al Forsberg says, "Using a geo-technical engineer out of the cities, determined that what we needed to do was take all that heavy dirt out of there and put in some lighter dirt to fill. The most economic of which turned out to be shredded tires. What would otherwise be a waste product."
Representative Kathy Brynaert presented the award in place of Governor Dayton. Forsberg said a paper on the technique will be submitted at a national conference for geo-technical engineering.
