Don't Step Out On Thin Ice

MANKATO , MINN. -

A warning to those itching to get out on the ice, the DNR tells us that there is no safe ice in the area.

Despite the biting cold earlier this week, fluctuating temperatures and an insulating snow pack means that ice formation will still not support anyone going out onto the ice.  Chris Howe, Conservation Officer with the Minnesota DNR says, "With projected warm ups this weekend, I think it's going to be a while before we have any safe fishable ice.  The DNR has a saying that ice is never safe, and that's true."

Ice is strongest when it's clear and weaker if it has a cloudy or milky color to it.  Four inches of clear ice is deemed safe for walking and ice fishing.  For comparison, 12-15 inches is good for supporting pickups.
