But before you do, Mankato Public Safety wants homeowners to take steps to protect their residence.
Police say it's becoming all–too–common after the holidays: homeowners and students returning home to find their valuables missing.
-Authorities advise to have a trusted friend or neighbor watch the home and collect your mail.
-Also, give a telephone number, destination and vacation route to a trusted person and call them to let them know you reached your destination.
-And student in particular should think about securing their valuables while they're gone.
Deputy Director Matt Westermeyer says, 'We ask people, particularly in those types of environments to take their valuables with them, don't leave them, because they can become easy targets.'
Also, plan for snow removal that might need done while you are gone and place lights on a timer to make it look like someone is home.
