Reaction to NRA's Statements

MANKATO , MINN. -

. In addition to blaming video games and the media for exposing children to violence, Top NRA lobbyist Wayne LaPierre said, "the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. Congressman Tim Walz was endorsed by the NRA in his last election for congress. But in reaction to LaPierre's comments the Congressman parted ways with the group. Walz says, "I clearly reject the idea of armed encampments in our schools its simply not the right way to approach things."

Saint Peter's Chief of police Matt Peters says it's important that we don't overreach and that more dialogue is needed before any big proposals are made. Peters says, "I think the districts have to determine that on their own. For me fundamentally that's really what our country was founded on is that autonomy."

Many of Minnesota's schools do have police liaisons that patrol the districts' campuses. But Superintendent Jeff Olson says a liaison's job has more to do with developing better communication between students and the police department. Olson says, "Students are much more likely to talk to them about potential issues and potential harms that might occur and there can be proactive measures rather than reactive measures taken to deal with those situations."

Olson also says he believes this topic deserves a more comprehensive study, rather than relying on one solution.
