Hurricanes, fires, tornados, and floods have kept the American Red Cross incredibly busy. This past year the organization has responded to more than one hundred large–scale disasters. In total more than 29,000 trained disaster workers served nearly 10 million meals this year and distributed almost seven million relief items. Kruger says, "It's been a very busy year for the American Red Cross, We've sent out about 45 volunteers from southern Minnesota alone."
Emergency services director Rachel Kruger says, they haven't sent out that many volunteers since Hurricane Katrina. The Red Cross's South Central Chapter is still sending out volunteers to help with Hurricane Sandy relief. The Red Cross also needs blood donations. Kruger says the organization hasn't replaced all the blood it lost on the East Coast during Hurricane Sandy.
