A new monument at Reconciliation Park in Mankato isn't finished yet, but it's already drawing visitors.

Construction crews are finishing a statue in remembrance of the Dakota 38, Native Americans hanged in Mankato near the end of the US–Dakota War of 1862.

The new statue will be finished by December 26th, exactly 150 years after the largest mass hanging in US history took place.

St. Paul American Indian Education student Naomi Berglund is Lakota. She and her classmates took an overnight trip to visit Reconciliation Park.

"There's just a lot of ignorance out there and it's better for people to understand and forgive... forgive each other,"says Berglund.

On Wednesday, December 26th, Dakota horseback riders will arrive at Reconciliation Park after a 330 mile trek from Lower Brule, South Dakota to remember the lives lost in 1862.
