Dakota Memorial Dedication in Mankato Wednesday

Wednesday marks 150 years since the largest mass hanging in American history.

To mark the occasion, a new memorial recognizing the 38 Dakota warriors executed as part of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 will be dedicated in Mankato's Reconciliation Park.

The ceremony begins around 10 a.m. as participants of a memorial ride arrive in town.

The "Dakota 38" Memorial cost $110,000.

The ride and ceremony will come with some street closures.

From the City of Mankato website:

-North of Civic Center Plaza, Hickory Street and Riverfront Drive and continue to south of the Plum and Riverfront Drive intersection. Access will be open for traffic to Civic Center Plaza/Hickory Street and also at Plum Street. In this vicinity, Riverfront Drive's northbound and southbound lanes will be closed.

-Main Street (from Riverfront Drive to west of Second Street)—access will be available for northbound and southbound Second and Main streets hill traffic. Traffic lanes going toward Riverfront Drive will be closed. Lanes coming from Riverfront Drive will be open for City Center Hotel traffic.

-Detour routes will be along Warren or Cherry to Second streets and then to Plum Street and back to Riverfront Drive.
