A fire in rural Sleepy Eye requires mutual aid and sends two people to the hospital

When fire crews from Sleepy Eye, New Ulm and Hanska, responded to a fire around 1p.m. this afternoon the dairy barn was engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire is unknown.

The call came in just after 1 o'clock each fire department had a pumper and a tanker to assist them. While the fire was contained very quickly, the smoke and steam lingered for several hours and could be seen from miles away.

Assistant Fire Chief, Ron Zinniel says, "The fire is still under investigation. We don't know if the cause of the fire or if weather played a part of it, we don't know at this time."

The owners, Ben and Genny Fischer were taken to the hospital to be looked at but did not suffer any injuries. The family of the owners did not want wish to comment. Fire crews left the scene around 6:30 this evening. Hoffman construction also assisted with a pay loader and gravel to make the ground less slippery. The dairy barn is a total loss, along with 19 cows that died in the fire.
