MANKATO , MINN. -
10:00 AM this morning may have been a little too early for some to brave the subzero temperatures, but that is exactly what a hearty group of individuals did as they rounded the trail at Minneopa State Park.
Today marked the state park's inaugural "First Day Hike", a national movement in all 50 states to get those to reconnect with the outdoors. State Park Naturalist Scott Kudelka lead the group along the trail explaining everything from how the falls formed, to wildlife in the area.
"What a better way to trudge through the snow and hear a little bit of the history and natural characteristics of Minneopa" Kudelka said.
Designed to get people off on a good foot for their New Year's Resolution and to learn more about one of our local gems, the hike was invigorating, even at 5 below zero. The snow made for a picturesque landscape despite the lack of water flowing from the falls.
Everyone who started the hike finished it and it should be a memorable way to ring in 2013 for those in attendance. When asked about his favorite part, Kudelka said, "Just that people showed up!"
The park gives us a glimpse back into Minnesota's rich geologic history. Looking to preserve and appreciate the past will put us in a good place for the future. Minneopa will also host a candlelit cross country ski course from 5 to 9 PM on January 26.
