Mankato Fire Department reporting mostly good news over the holidays. From Thanksgiving to New Years' Day, the "Keep the wreath bright, prevent a red light" campaign kept track of preventable fires in Mankato, and injuries related to those fires. Although two fires caused property damage, no one was hurt. Jeff Bengtson, says, "You know, obviously, that's our first, first concern is keeping PEOPLE safe. So, if we don't have any injuries, that's terrific." Both fires started when something was left unattended: a still lit cigarette caused $50,000.00 damage and a toaster oven $15,000.00 of damage. For comparison, last years' campaign reported $203,000.00 in damage from three preventable structure fires.
