NEW ULM, Minn. -

Throughout the state of Minnesota, about 40 superintendent positions will need to be filled. Creating plenty of competition for those school districts.

Because of that, New Ulm has hired a consulting firm to aid in advertising and the initial interview process to replace superintendent Harold Remme, who feels he's leaving behind a solid legacy.

Remme says, "Right now we're in a pretty good position in terms of employee bargaining - pretty much wrapped-up. We only have one employee group that's not settled at this point.

We have our finances in place with the referendum passing last fall, we're really in a pretty good position right now to be attractive to a new candidate."

His term included closing schools in Hanska and Lafayette, as well as the old middle school, which currently serves as an administration building, amid declining enrollment and funding cuts.

And with the toughest questions already answered, Remme says it'll give the new superintendent an opportunity to focus on the school, rather than the books.

Remme says, "You do need to have some time to become acquainted with the process of how the school operates and community people to be in contact with. They don't need to be concerned about some of the more pressing issues."
