MANKATO, MN -

Now that authorities confirm yesterday's deadly incident started as a welfare check...we asked what the process is. Officials told News 12 a welfare check is done when a family member is unable to reach someone and they contact authorities because they are concerned for that person's health and safety. Each welfare check is approached differently, depending on information given to law enforcement. According to the Minnesota Department Of Public Safety, in this instance, attempts to speak with Mr. Tschohl were not successful, so officers on the scene responded accordingly. Mankato Police Commander Pam Hermanson, said," Any call could escalate, you just have to be prepared for it." Authorities stress that the majority of welfare checks DO NOT escalate anywhere near the level of Thursday's standoff in North Mankato.
