NORTH MANKATO, Minn. -
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man shot in the standoff in North Mankato Thursday as 83-year-old Lloyd Hodgson Tschohl of 1610 Lor Ray Drive.
The press release stated that Tschohl died from multiple gunshot wounds, which the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said occurred after he exited the back door of his home firing two handguns at officers. Three officers shot and killed Tschohl, and all three have been placed on administrative leave.
According to the BCA's investigation, North Mankato Police were contacted by a family member of Tschohl's on Wednesday, asking them to check on him. Police visited the residence twice that day, but he did not respond. Police were contacted again Thursday, with family members telling them at the time that Tschohl was making homicidal statements, and was in possession of weapons at the home.
The press release goes on to say that North Mankato police went to check with Tschohl again Thursday around 10 a.m., who again refused to comply with the officers. The River Valley Tactical Response Team was called in, and for three hours they attempted to contact Tschohl.
Around 2 p.m., the Tschohl fired at officers at his back door and front window. While the BCA press release says the officers were merely trying to get a better view inside, reporters at the scene witnessed officers breaking the glass of the front window before they yelled "shots fired".
A short while later, Tschohl exited the back door and opened fire on the officers stationed behind the home, who returned fire, hitting Tschohl. He was then taken to Mayo Clinic Health Systems-Mankato, where he was pronounced dead.
The BCA has identified the officers involved as:
Ofc. Daniel Forester (North Mankato PD, 9 year veteran) Ofc. Douglas Frericks (Mankato DPS, 26 year veteran) Sgt. Jeffrey Knutson (Mankato DPS, 10 year veteran)
