Did you know most home emergencies are preventable? The Mankato Department of Public Safety says it's true and that most people can make their home safer. To help you, both police and fire divisions offer free home security and safety surveys. During a survey, fire officials will specifically focus on items that prevent fires from cooking and other causes. Mankato Department of Public Safety, Fire Division, Lt. Sean Hayes, says, "Again, you know, starting from the exterior of the home, working through all the rooms. And getting down and looking at electrical things and things in the garage....that kind of stuff." Officials will also check that fire hydrants are accessible and house numbers are visible.
