On Tuesday, Governor Mark Dayton laid out his plan to deal with the state's projected deficit. One of his ideas is to increase taxes on cigarettes.
The current tax on a pack of cigarettes is $1.58. Under the Governor's new budget, this new proposal would add an additional $0.94 totaling $2.52.
This is just one item on the agenda for the Governor's 2013 state budget. Some believe the increase might help convince some people to quit lighting up. But, even a higher price won't make it any easier.
Chip Gay, Clinical Exercise Specialist at Mayo Clinic Health System says, "If you're trying to make any changes in your life, if you have good support from your family, your coworkers, your employer, your physician; all that stuff makes things easier for people to make these changes."
Doctors say tobacco use greatly increases the chances for serious health problems like lung cancer and heart disease.
