Council Passes Resolution Affecting Township Annexation

Posted: Updated:

Tonight the Mankato City Council passed a resolution by a 4- 3 vote to look into finding out what it would cost to annex Lime Township.

The city staff proposed an assessment that would lower the cost for a sanitary sewer extension. Based on the feasibility report presented in early January the cost for the project is split between the city and residents. The current proposal states that 66 percent, which is equivalent to $24,000 will be assessed to Lime Township Residents.

Richard Kern says, "To say we have a good deal is a stretch but this option definitely helps."

City Engineer, Jeff Johnson says they were able to reduce the assessments providing additional funds from General Obligation Bonds and Storm Water Revenue. However, this could mean delaying road projects such as Ramsey and Locus until 2014. Which, was a reason why the councils members were split with their decision.

Council member Karen Foreman says, "My concern is as we continue to go forward with annexation every time one of these come up in price they are high and it's difficult if we are forced to push projects further back."

While other council members were in favor of making the costs more attainable for those affected.

Council member Mark Frost says, "I'm really proud of this situation, I'm really proud of the city staff for what they're doing and we're making this affordable as such so that's why I'm very supportive of this project."

Overall a sense of relief for Lime Township residents after an agreement of annexation that took place in 1997 is finally taking shape with a new plan to bring the cost to the homeowners down a bit.

The council says they will look into the possibility of construction on Ramsey Street still happening this year. Another public hearing will take place on February 25th.
