MANKATO, Minn. -
A 6-0 Mankato City Council vote, with Christopher Frederick abstaining, will be used by supporters of the civic center expansion to have Mankato included in a rumored 500 million dollar bonding bill being put together by Governor Mark Dayton.
Governor Dayton's budget looks good to the Mankato City Council right now. But doubts are growing over whether all of his tax increases will come to fruition, and whether that contentious debate will even allow a bonding bill to finally deliver the matching funds for Mankato to expand its civic center.
Mayor Eric Anderson says, "I struggle with a lot of this because we're pushing it on the back of St. Paul and while the stars might align now because of the configuration in St. Paul, if it doesn't happen, I can't say I'm going to be overly shocked."
Several MSU officials, including coach Mike Hastings were supposed to speak at the meeting tonight, but the comments by the mayor and council member Frederick prompted four of the members to call for the end of the discussion, forcing a vote.
However, we were able to catch up with Jonathan Zierdt of Greater Mankato Growth afterward.
Jonathan Zierdt says, "It's going to be important to show unified community support, business support, which is what we've been doing the last handful of years. We look forward to that conversation. I look forward to those opportunities to visit with our elected officials about the impact of this. Why our business community supports it, why it's important for the community, and mostly why it's vital to the regional economy, as well as the state's economy."
