Senator Al Franken has lined up in support of a proposed assault weapons ban.
Like many on Capitol Hill, it was the mass murder of 26 people, including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut that has led Senator Al Franken to get behind, and even offer amendments to a massive assault weapons ban being discussed in Congress.
"I believe in the 2nd Amendment. I believe people have the fundamental right to own a gun for hunting, for collection, for protection, for sport. I don't believe that the assault weapons are needed, we've seen so many of these tragedies."
The proposed bill also includes a ban on any magazine hold over ten rounds, and Franken is focusing on mental health treatment in amendments of his own.
Gun groups are fighting the bans, saying it could be a slippery slope toward a complete gun ban, citing the far smaller amount of deaths from guns designated as assault weapons, versus the more widely-owned hand guns.
Responding to that argument, Franken says, "As far as the slippery slope is concerned, we already ban machine guns, automatic weapons. This is about a very small subset of semi-automatic weapons. Your deer rifle is a semi-automatic rifle. [AR-15s] are not needed for hunting."
