Alliant Energy awarded the school more than $33,000 in incentives through its commercial new construction program. The district spent more than $200,000 on energy conservation in its new high school and remodeling Montgomery Elementary and Middle School. Combined, these projects will reduce the district's energy usage by almost 300,000 kilowatt–hours each year, that's more than 30 times the amount of electricity the average home uses each year. Superintendent Matt Helgerson says "We're being proactive and I think that's our theme right now is to be proactive in all of our approaches and in education."
Helgerson says the construction will save the district more than $28,000 a year in energy costs. He says the school will have made all its money back from this investment in just under eight years.
