New form of preschool opening in Mankato

MANKATO, Minn -

It's known as an alternative to a traditional form of preschool.

Here in Mankato, a new facility is gearing up to open its doors on Monday to youngsters. But while this school focuses on learning, staff say it's how children learn-that sets this facility apart from the rest.

"I'm definitely really excited," said Beth Webb, director of 'Here We Grow LLC." "This had been a dream of staff and I, and we're excited to get it off and running."

Here We Grow is a school is operated under what is known as a Reggio format.

"Reggio schools focus on parent and family partnerships with the teachers within the school; teachers act more as facilitators of learning, where children learn through play," said Webb.

As learning takes place, it does so without a concrete schedule in place.

"Children learn math when they're ready to learn math, and we help them with that," said Webb. "We still work to meet the state standards for early childhood education, but they do it through play."

Unlike a textbook-style curriculum, Webb says when children come to Here We Grow, the school format will be activity-based.

"All of our learning is hands on, for example once the weather is warmer, out back, you'll see a sandbox," said Webb. "We're going to have a garden where children can learn about gardening."

So whether it's playing with blocks, or paint, Webb says 'Here We Grow' will help kids learn more efficiently.

"This is one of the few Reggio-inspired schools in Minnesota," said Webb. "They're becoming more common around the area as we learn more that children learn best through play."

If you're considering enrolling your child into Here We Grow, the school's director says there are currently two toddler openings, and eight preschool spots available.
