MANKATO , MINN. -
Mankato elementary schools are teaming up with the city and Region 9 to create safer routes for pedestrians near the schools. Funded by MnDOT the Safe Routes to School grant provides communities the opportunity make improvements to the routes children use to walk and bike to school. These improvements range from educational materials for families to infrastructure changes like sidewalks and pathways. Superintend ant Sheri Allen says, "Anytime when we look at walkability and livability in a community is how can we move from place to place knowing its safe and promoting the wellness of our children is so important."
In 2012 a planning committee surveyed parents from all six schools. The survey found that a majority of parents didn't let their children walk to school due to safety concerns. Mankato city council will decide tonight if they will authorize the application for the funds.
