Burglaries are down in Mankato in the past year, but police think there are still things people can do to drive the rate even lower.
The city's Department of Public Safety offers free home security surveys to help pinpoint areas of concern.
Though one of biggest drivers of theft is the simple act of not locking your doors.
Commander Amy Vokal says, "Well over 90% of car thefts are people just trying door handles, going down the street, trying and trying. If you lock your doors, that's he cure."
Other areas of concern include valuables located next to windows, allowing the thieves quick access without having to enter the home.
