SLEEPY EYE, MN -
The roads are open once again in southwestern Minnesota. A dusting of snow mixed with gale-force winds created white-out conditions throughout the region last night.
MnDOT Monday night closed traffic on segments of State Highway 4 and 19, as well as parts of US 14 and US 71 – all because of the whiteout conditions. Because of those road closures, the girls' basketball team from Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial was forced to spend the night in Sleepy Eye after the team's contest against Sleepy Eye Saint Mary's.
LCWM's girls' basketball coach tells News 12 that some parents were able to book hotel rooms for the night with their student-athletes, but other players were hosted by Saint Mary's families.
The Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial team bus left Sleepy Eye this morning to bring students back and return to class. Sleepy Eye schools started two hours late Tuesday morning – LCWM ran on time.
Sleepy Eye Saint Mary's won Monday night's contest, 63-34.
