Old Convent To Be Torn Down

SLEEPY EYE, Minn. -

One local community will have to say goodbye to a very old building.

Parishioners of Sleepy Eye Saint Mary's Catholic Church will soon see some changes to their campus.

The old convent, built in the 1920's, will be torn down.  The building has fallen into disrepair and has been under–utilized as a storage space.

"The last sister left in 1995, and then it was a matter of trying to find a use for it" says Monsignor Eugene Lozinski.

The demolition will happen quickly.  Everything of value has been removed from the building.

There has been controversy over the demolition.  Some church members wanted to save the building.  Plans for the site have yet to be finalized.
