Time to announce this month's KEYC Jefferson Good People Award recipient. News 12's Lisa Cownie introduces us to Tom Nolan. Tom Nolan is a volunteer with the "Some time Away" program. A VINE-sponsored program four hours each Tuesday and Thursday that offers caregivers of patients with Dementia or Alzheimer's a break. Tom says, "I just enjoy it. You get to meet so many people and learn their stories." It's those stories that got him hooked on volunteering at a very young age. "When I was 12, there was a nursing home across the street, I played chess with a resident there and found out he was the 1913 U.S. Chess Champion" And that was the beginning of a lifetime of volunteering for Nolan. "If they know someone will be there every Tuesday at 3, it gives them something to look forward to. You can just read the paper, some want the Bible, and just someone to talk to."
So he's spent hours each week reading, playing games and he's says its been time well spent. "I would encourage everyone to volunteer, even if its one day a week. In that one day you are making more difference to that person that you're seeing than you could ever imagine"
