The Gaylord Police Department is being sued by the American Civil Liberties Union on discrimination claims.
The ACLU says the rights of Jesus Mendoza Sierra were violated by police when officers arrested and interrogated her.
The organization says Gaylord Police assumed Mendoza was in the U.S. illegally. After officers entered her private home, Mendoza showed authorities her immigration papers--proving her residency.
"And they released her only after they saw her immigration papers, which made it clear they were looking at her for immigration violations, which isn't something a local police station should be doing," said Ian Bratlie, a staff attorney for the ACLU.
The Gaylord police chief declined comment to News 12 when asked about the case.
Members of the Sibley County sheriff's office have also been named as defendants in the litigation.
The lawsuit has been filed in federal court and attorneys say a first hearing date has not been set.
