According to the CDC the vaccine was only nine percent effective for patients over the age of 65. Earlier in the year officials claimed the vaccine was 62 percent effective for all of its patients, but the CDC revised that to 56 percent. Despite this report health officials still recommend everyone get a flu shot. Mayo Clinic Health System Mankato physician's assistant Jessica Sheehy says, "The strains are different every year. They make new vaccines every year that try to target the strains that they believe will be most prevalent during the flu season and its still a good idea to get it to prevent any disease."
Sheehy says even if the vaccine is only 9 percent effective, its better than not getting it at all. She says shot still decreases the intensity of your symptoms and helps prevents the spread of disease.
