Local State Legislator Pushes for Daytime Headlights Law

One of our local state representatives says she wants to keep drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists safer on the road.

Rep. Kathy Brynaert is sponsoring a bill that would require drivers to turn on their headlights at all times, even during the day.

Mankato Public Safety Commander Jeremy Clifton thinks the idea is a good one.

"All of those running lights on, just day or night, make vehicles inherently more visible, that's why they make motorcycles do it," he explains.

Brynaert says some people argue that newer cars are already equipped with lights that turn on automatically, day or night and that a law wouldn't be necessary. But she disagrees.

"On the other hand there are a number of older vehicles on the highway yet that don't have that option where they keep the lights on so it would take...a change in statute would be beneficial.
