MANKATO , MINN. -

When a majority of members on a city council are together they are required to abide by the open government meeting law. But a new bill may provide a loophole in cyberspace. A bill was introduced to the house that would exempt online public discussions made by government officials. Supporters say this is needed to update government to the 21st century. Chief Author Representative Duane Qu am says this is more of a safeguard, so that officials wouldn't get in trouble after the fact for posting something on social media and not notifying the general public. Quam says, "You know social media frequently you might not know until afterwards that you had a quorum taking you know a virtual town hall or some other event."

The bill would also prohibit replacing public meetings and voting online. Private conversations via cyberspace would still not be allowed. During today's house hearing the bill was put on hold for further discussions.
