Minnesota lawmakers propose a bill to combat fake 911 emergency calls. If passed, the law would make it a misdemeanor to call 911 when there is no real emergency. Introduced by Representative Tony Cornish, the bipartisan legislation is on its way to the House Public Safety Committee. Cornish says, "It's like an air traffic controller and you're sitting in that desk and you just do not have time to mess around with some kid or somebody that wants to do somebody harm and calls in a fake call. So it's a very important issue as far as timeliness and efficiency in your 911 call centers."
Last summer a Minneapolis man stabbed two police officers after luring them with a fake 911 call. This law would make it a gross misdemeanor if the call was intended to lure police. The charge could be raised to a felony if the call results in a serious injury.
