MANKATO, Minn -

March 3-10 is National Sleep Awareness week.

While millions don't get enough rest, the problem will be compounded for many as the clocks move ahead one hour this weekend. But there are things you can do on your own to get more shut-eye, besides trying to make it to bed earlier.

"I get about probably 5 hours (of sleep) if I'm lucky," said Stephanie Fennern of Wanda, MN.

And doctors say there are many other people like Fennern who don't get enough rest.

"Sleep disorders are very common," said Dr. Umesh Vyas of Mayo Clinic Health System.

Health experts say over than 50 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders and/or intermittent sleep problems.

"It can affect your immune system...it can cause diabetes, it can cause heart problem(s)," said Vyas.

Fennern works from 3:00 in the afternoon 11:30 at night. She says sleep often gets pushed back.

"Going to school and working, trying to find time to fit everything in, and then try to like have a personal life, it's very hard, there's not enough hours in the day," Fennern said.

To help you get better sleep at night, doctors say you can do a number of things, such as avoiding prolonged daytime naps, and paying close attention to what you eat and drink.

"The number of hours of sleep people are getting in this century...is almost an hour less than what it was in the previous century," said Vyas.

And that lack of sleep can make a significant impact the following morning.

"You feel very tired, and sometimes if you don't get enough sleep, you're very short and you don't have a lot of patience for people--it just makes for a long day," said Fennern.

Doctors say the most common sleep-related issue people experience is insomnia, which involves trouble falling and/or staying asleep.

Experts say adults should get at least 6 1/2 hours of sleep nightly. Twelve to 13-year-olds require anywhere between 9-10 hours.
