State human services commissioner makes stop in North Mankato

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. -

The commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Services joined a handful of seniors at a roundtable in North Mankato on Thursday.

Lucinda Jesson came to town to see what's being done to help keep seniors in their homes and communities. The commissioner is also highlighting the bipartisan Reform 2020 effort. Jesson's office says that initiative will change Minnesota's Medicaid program to better meet the challenges of rising health-care costs and a growing population.

"It saves money in the long term, it's budget neutral in the short-term, and I think can really help improve people's lives," Jesson said.

Jesson says it's a priority of hers to ensure seniors have the best tools available to provide for themselves as much as they can.

"There is nothing more important that we do in state government beyond taking care of seniors and people with disabilities," said Jesson.

Jesson says as part of Governor Mark Dayton's budget, over $4 million is slated to be invested in various home and community-based services.
