State Patrol Releases Report on Cause of Crash That Killed Popular Coach

Posted: Updated:

The State Patrol has released its crash reconstruction report for the accident that claimed the life of a popular Waseca high school football coach last November.

Fred Statz, 25, was killed while driving home from a football banquet November 12.

Statz was a former player for the MSU Mankato football team and also played for an area semi–pro team out of Fairmont.

His vehicle was in the intersection of old Highway 14 and County Road 27 when an oncoming semi truck hit his vehicle. He died at the scene.

According to the report, the primary contributing factor in this crash was Statz's failure to yield the right of way.

According to the report Statz should have remained stopped until he was sure the semi was stopping.

It goes on to say weather, road conditions, vehicle equipment failure and physical impairment were not factors in the crash.
