New York City -
Osama bin Laden's son-in-law will be tried here in the United States, amid objections from some lawmakers.
Security checks were set up outside federal court in lower Manhattan. Inside, Osama bin laden's son-in-law was arraigned on a charge he conspired to kill Americans. Sulaiman abu Ghaith's attorney entered a "not guilty" plea. But prosecutors say abu Ghaith was the chief spokesman for the terror network. In this video released the day after 9-11, he sat next to bin Laden, praised the attacks and warned of more American deaths to come. Prosecutors say abu Ghaith gave an extensive statement to U.S. officials after his arrest overseas, totaling 22 pages. Abu Ghaith's trial in New York is one of the first prosecutions of senior al-Qaida members on U.S. soil. But his very presence in this country is controversial. LAWMAKERS ON Both sides of the aisle praised his capture but some Republicans say abu Ghaith belongs in Guantanamo as an enemy combatant.
The Obama administration says proceeding in federal court is in the country's best interest. It might even be quicker. Bail was not requested at the hearing. The judge says he'll set a trial date at a meeting with both sides next month. The trial is expected to last about three weeks.
