MANKATO, Minn. -
A portion of U.S. Highway 169 has been shut down.
Officials say the heavy rain and frozen culverts were the main causes of the situation. A public information officer with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MN/DOT) told News 12 crews were out Saturday morning trying to clear culverts near the road. However, the heavy rain and water runoff eventually became too much.
The Saint Peter Police Department worked with the Minnesota State Patrol to close the southbound lanes.
Authorities on scene told News 12 at least two accidents resulted from the standing water on the road.
Southbound traffic from Saint Peter was being detoured to Minnesota Highway 22 as a result of the situation.
MNDOT says the southbound lanes from Saint Peter to Mankato will be closed overnight. Motorists are being advised to use extra caution this evening when traveling on roadways.
