The Roman Catholic Church has a new pontiff. Pope Francis is the 266th pope of the Catholic church. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who has served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998 is the new pontiff and will take the name Pope Francis I. He was elevated to cardinal in 2001.
Every time a new pontiff is chosen, a senior cardinal goes up to him and asks: "And by what name do want to be called?" The question is popped immediately, while all electors are still locked in the Sistine chapel. So the chosen person better have done his homework and already picked a name.
A senior cardinal appeared on the balcony to convey the news to throngs of people who gathered in St Peter's Square. He read the name in Latin from the main balcony of St. Peter's Basilica as part of the "Habemus Papam" - "We have a pope" - formula that proclaims the election of a new pope.<
Crowds cheered on learning the name of the new leader, while awaiting his first appearance on the balcony.
Earlier, church bells ringing from the Sistine Chapel could be heard across Rome, the traditional celebration of the announcement of a new pope.
